Habitat
Chinook Salmon inhabit both freshwater rivers and the ocean. They spawn in large, gravelly riverbeds before migrating to the Pacific Ocean, often traveling thousands of miles during their lifecycle.

They show peak activity during early mornings, late afternoons, and around dawn and dusk when feeding intensely.
Best catching conditons
Ideal conditions involve cool water temperatures between 50°F and 60°F, clear to moderately clear water, and overcast or partly sunny skies. They are more active during tidal changes and lower-light periods.

Recoqnisable features

Colors
Chinook Salmon display a metallic blue-green or olive back with silver sides when in the ocean. Freshwater spawning fish develop dark backs with red or maroon hues, sometimes appearing almost black with red spots.
Fins
They have large, pointed pectoral fins, a single dorsal fin, an adipose fin on the back near the tail, and a broad, strong forked tail fin which helps in powerful swimming.
Patterns
Ocean phase Chinook have scattered black spots on their back and upper tail fin. Spawning adults exhibit less prominent spotting and more uniform darker colors with reddish hues.
